It’s officially summer and I couldn’t be more thrilled!

I love summer for so many reasons. One of the best things about the changing seasons is the chance to make some fresh changes to your decor. Now is the perfect time to freshen up your home, apartment,or family cabin making it light and airy, perfect for those hot summer months. I’ve teamed up with Urban Barn to share some of my tips and tricks for making your space feel fresh this season!

First things first, try updating at least one major element. When I am craving some change in our home decor, I always start by switching out one of these pieces. You can create a whole new look simply by replacing your window coverings ( I almost always go with white) or updating your rug to a soft neutral with lots of texture. I love the look of leather, and this arm chair is the perfect shade for this summer, but a streamlined neutral also works, especially if you are adding in lots of colour with your accessories. To bring up the cozy factor in your space,  add in a  rustic side or coffee table!

Next I lighten up my throw pillows, and add in some fun patterns. Summer is all about having fun, so why not go a little outside the box and toss on some palm tree pillows, pillows in shades of blue and green reminiscent of the ocean, and a few neutral ones to balance it all out. If you are using a lot of white pillows make sure they have different textures, like this Mongolian pillow. Don’t be afraid to mix your patterns. If you are new at mixing patterns start with neutral colours like grey, white, cream and beige, with one or two pops of colour/pattern ( shown in bottom design board).

Lastly I like to add in some green. Hanging planters are very popular this season, along with succulents, herbs, or even a cute leaf dish, giving a nod to the natural elements of summer. I love using my mug collection as vases or for potting little plants and placing them on my coffee table, dining table or island.

Another secret tip of mine is  to dry the greenery used in a flower arrangement and use it throughout the year as a pretty plant ( no one will know it’s dried), as shown below.
